Inner City Ministry

Sanctity of Salvation Inner City Ministry (SOS) was created from a spiritual vision from Pastor Terry A. Webster, Sr. and developed by Ministry Coordinator Deacon Melvin Blakey. SOS started serving the community in April 2010. What began as a monthly food giveaway to members in the surrounding community has developed into a monthly giveaway of clothing, a summer feeding program, weekly meals, and new found relationships with the residents in the area.

In June and July 2011, SOS served meals to the children in the community during their summer break. The breakfasts and lunches started out slow, but soon grew into a steady flow of participants. Last year in June and July, the program was extended to the adults in the community. Most days more than 100 meals were served from the remodeled kitchen sponsored in part by the United Parcel Service (UPS).

What the program revealed is that there is a need beyond giving away food once a month and serving meals during the school summer breaks. So on July 10, 2012, with blessings of Pastor Webster, Deacon Blakey took serving the community to another level. SOS began serving meals on every Tuesday evening from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. The community responded in such a positive way! The meals have gone from averaging 30 to almost 100 at the location. Then another need was recognized by the leaders.

There are homeless families living under the bridges and various places in the downtown area in need of good nourishment. SOS now cooks and transports meals to these individuals. In record time, the count has increased from 40 to 75 meals weekly. Blankets were collected and taken to the families living under the bridges. It was quite successful!

Even though the count at the SOS location varies, feeding the community is a small part of the visionary change that SOS will bring to the neighborhood. The ultimate goal is to save souls and lead others to God. However, in the meantime, we are giving the community a hand up, not a hand out, to assist them in these hard economic times.

There are plans being developed to assist with getting shelter for members in the community. Eventually the goal is to operate a SOS shelter. The Recovery Ministry is training members to assist community members with various recovery needs. It will be presented in stages starting on Tuesday evenings in the very near future.

If you wish to be a sponsor of this ministry, please contact Deacon Melvin Blakey (317) 602-0311. This ministry is funded solely by private funding. Last year, the summer feeding program was approximately $2500 and weekly meals average $250 per week. Any assistance you offer will be greatly appreciated.
